Weekly HCRE Briefing: Major Health Systems Announce Outpatient Strategies | Top U.S. Regions for HealthTech Investments | NC Court to Review State’s CON Law

  1. A new report from Silicon Valley Bank analyzes the state of the health care technology market. The top U.S. regions for health care technology companies are New York, San Francisco, Massachusetts, Austin and Nashville. Nearly half of all health technology investments this year have gone to AI companies.
  2. Executives at several health systems announced big investments in their outpatient strategy. CommonSpirit said it added 56 outpatient care locations this year. Tenet Health, which owns USPI, the largest ASC operator in the country, plans to add 55 to 80 new facilities over the next two years. HCA Healthcare will continue to execute its outpatient strategy so every hospital has 13 outpatient locations.
  3. A recent poll taken at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing indicated that owners and operators are more optimistic about the outlook for the industry. After several years of difficult operating conditions, occupancy numbers are trending up and operating costs are leveling off, which is driving better returns for owners and operators.
  4. The North Carolina Supreme Court ordered a lower court to consider the constitutionality of the state’s Certificate of Need (CON) law. The case involves an eye doctor who is arguing that CON requirements, restricting his ability to perform surgeries at his office, violate his constitutional rights. North Carolina has made headlines in recent years as state legislators wrestled with CON reform.

  6. Jefferson Health plans to spend $900M on its Lehigh Valley Health facilities over the next three years, including the construction of a new mother and baby unit at its Pocono Hospital, the completion of an emergency department expansion at its Muhlenberg Hospital and the purchase of a medical office building in Gilbertsville.
  7. Hartford HealthCare is seeking approval to expand its main hospital campus with five new projects, including: 1) a 470K sf inpatient tower; 2) an 80K sf patient bed wing expansion; 3) an 80K sf cancer center and emergency department expansion; 4) a 35K sf medical outpatient building; and 5) a 600K sf parking deck with clinical services on the ground floor.
  8. Swope Health (MO) has asked for community input regarding its Swope Hill Village project in Kansas City. The project, described as the first of its kind in Missouri, includes affordable senior housing, health care facilities and mental health resources, along with a community center and community gardens.
  9. Kaiser Permanente continues to make progress on its new $1.48B hospital campus at the Railyards in Sacramento. Kaiser is seeking a building permit for a new seven-story parking garage, one of the key components of the project.
  10. Lifepoint Health and PeaceHealth have proposed a 96-bed free-standing behavioral health hospital in Springfield, Oregon. This project would address the current shortage of behavioral health beds in the area.
