About Brandon
Brandon Helms, a shareholder in Hall Render’s health regulatory section, has more than 17 years of experience between government and private practice. As a former federal prosecutor, Brandon is adept at litigating in court and leading a team of investigators. He routinely assists clients in conducting internal investigations, drafting self-disclosures to CMS and HHS-OIG, responding to subpoenas or civil investigative demands and defending against federal False Claims Act investigations and litigations. Recognized for his experience, Brandon serves as a vice-chair of the American Health Law Association's Fraud and Abuse Practice Group, a national community of more than 1,500 health lawyers and professionals.
Prior to joining Hall Render, Brandon served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney (civil and criminal) in the Eastern District of Michigan for eight years. During his tenure as an AUSA, Brandon conducted numerous grand jury investigations and civil False Claims Act investigations, focusing on health care fraud and white-collar crime. He successfully prosecuted or settled investigations involving the Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law and other false claims submitted to Medicare. Brandon began his career in Chicago, where he represented companies in patent infringement litigation, including generic pharmaceutical companies in Hatch-Waxman litigation. Throughout his career, Brandon has first- and second-chaired more than 10 federal trials.
Outside of the office, Brandon enjoys spending time with his family and engaging in creative writing. He published his first novel with a small hybrid publisher and hopes to one day sign a deal with a large publishing house.
