Health Care Facility Development and Management Trends

This session will discuss the type of new hospital and health care facilities being built around the country, including ambulatory surgery centers, behavioral health facilities, free-standing emergency departments, specialty hospitals and senior housing facilities. The speakers will address regulatory trends driving the growth in new health care facilities, as well as the different transaction structures that are used to own and operate modern health care facilities. The session will also provide an overview of how health care providers are getting into the housing business to address social determinants of health.

Meet the Speakers

Andrew Dick – Hall Render Attorney

Andrew Dick is a Shareholder in the Indianapolis office. His practice focuses on real estate transactions and environmental law. He advises hospitals and health care systems around the country on the planning, construction and development of new hospitals, medical office buildings, surgery centers and skilled nursing facilities. He represents clients on a broad range of real estate matters, including the acquisition of land, selection of developers and the negotiation of transaction documents, including letters of intent, development agreements, space leases, ground leases, easements and restrictive covenants. In addition to his experience on traditional real estate matters, Andrew has a significant amount of experience counseling clients on fraud and abuse laws that apply to real estate transactions. He is frequently called upon to assist clients with lease administration and the creation of policies and procedures to ensure that leasing arrangements comply with the Stark Law and the Anti-Kickback Statute. Andrew also advises clients on a broad range of environmental law matters, including environmental due diligence, air and water permitting, regulatory programs for the cleanup of contaminated property and the disposal of medical, pharmaceutical and hazardous wastes. For several years, Andrew served as the Chair of the Real Estate Affinity Group for the American Health Law Association. He also served on the Planning Committee for the Building Owners and Managers Association – Medical Office Building Conference.

Lorie Damon – Managing Director, Cushman & Wakefield

Lorie Damon leads Cushman & Wakefield’s national Health Care Practice Group. She’s responsible for delivering expertise to health care systems, physician groups and other health care providers and real estate owners. Lori leverages internal terms and capabilities to tailor services to health care clients, assuring that what she deliver aligns with their approach to care delivery and their financial and operational objectives. She works across our portfolio and markets, assisting community hospitals, academic medical centers, children’s hospitals and pediatric centers, regional health care providers and independent hospitals, and her client base includes both for-profit and not-for-profit health care systems as well as investor owners of health care real estate. Prior to joining Cushman & Wakefield, she held positions in Raymond James’ Health Care Investment Banking group and also as BOMA’s Vice President of Education and Research, where she spearheaded the growth and development of the organization’s flagship Medical Office Buildings & Health Care Facilities Conference. In 2018, Real Estate Forum named her an Influencer in Health Care Real Estate.
