  1. Site prep is underway on a 68-acre parcel where University Health is building a new full-service hospital near Texas A&M University-San Antonio. The $475M project is planned for the historically underserved south side of San Antonio and will open in 2027.
  2. In response to hundreds of cancer patients coming from out of state to receive care at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, AZ, Banner Health and home builder Taylor Morrison are building 16 two-bedroom homes adjacent to the health care facility.
  3. Becker’s highlighted three major ASC deals that occurred in September: (i) Sutter Health added Sansum Clinic in Santa Barbara; (ii) UnitedHealth Group is pursuing a majority ownership stake in Guilford (CT) Surgery Center; and (iii) Amedisys shareholders approved a $3.3B acquisition by Optum.
  4. In a rare decision, the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee denied the CON application for Centerpoint Medical Center of Independence to build a $37M, three-bed emergency care hospital. Critics said the facility would be unable to deal with major medical emergencies and would be too close to existing hospitals.
  5. State officials rejected Alaska Regional Hospital’s CON application to build a freestanding ED in South Anchorage, finding that the facility would neither improve access to quality care nor reduce patient costs.
  6. South Carolina Gov. McMaster signed a law that eliminates CON in the state, aiming to improve health care accessibility and affordability by removing the requirement for state permission to build hospitals or acquire medical equipment. The bill passed in the state legislature earlier this year.
  7. HealthCare Appraisers released its 2023 Industry Outlook on GI practices. Among the predictions, the consolidated GI sector will be an attractive source of deals due to ancillary services, favorable demographics and changes in colorectal cancer screenings. The sector’s main challenges include provider shortages, inflation and complex hospital relationships.
  8. An $89M project obtained government approval to modernize facilities at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, IL. The project involves cutting surgical and ICU beds while modernizing the remaining medical surgery, recovery, operating and ICU facilities. The hospital said it has lost $62M since 2018.
  9. St. Elizabeth Healthcare is moving forward with plans to build a $125M hospital in southeastern Indiana near Cincinnati. The facility, expected to open in 2027, will include an emergency department, surgical capability and inpatient care.
  10. The Drug Enforcement Administration said it will extend telehealth flexibilities that enable clinicians to virtually prescribe controlled medications to their patients through 2024 as it mulls permanent policy changes. The agency recently held two days of listening sessions to inform the agency’s regulations.
