About Susan
With over three decades of dedicated experience, Susan James advises a broad range of health care industry clients on complex legal, operational, strategic and governance matters. Susan represents hospitals, health systems, physicians, physician group practices, ambulatory surgery centers and physician-owned hospitals. She enjoys navigating the complex and constantly evolving health laws and regulations while offering practical solutions to her clients.
Susan counsels health systems, physician practices and other providers on compliance with the Stark Law and the Anti-Kickback Statute, as well as other regulatory and compliance matters. She advises on compliance assessments, provider compensation matters, physician contracting, training and education, policy and procedure development, compliance with Corporate Integrity Agreement requirements and internal investigations.
In addition to regulatory and compliance matters, Susan advises on corporate, governance and general commercial matters, and she has led numerous transactional initiatives, including joint ventures, strategic affiliations, mergers and acquisitions, medical education collaborations and other strategic relationships. She also has experience in drafting and negotiating management services, professional services, distribution, consulting and vendor agreements. Additional areas of experience include clinical services, patient care and behavioral health.
Clients value Susan’s diverse business and legal background and experiences. Prior to joining Hall Render, she served as general counsel and chief legal officer for a large, integrated health system, an academic medical center and a long-term acute care hospital company, advising on the full scope of legal and operational issues. This experience gives her a practical understanding of the day-to-day challenges health care organizations face.
Before becoming an attorney, Susan worked as a professional musician. Today, she resides in Atlanta and enjoys University of Georgia football and traveling to adventurous locations with her family.
