CMS Overhauls Hospital Price Transparency Rule: Key Takeaways and Action Steps

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized significant updates to the Hospital Price Transparency regulation for the first time since the rule took effect on January 1, 2021. The changes include a new requirement that all hospital machine-readable files must now comply with a CMS template, a new estimated allowed amount requirement, website posting requirements, a mandatory compliance statement and monitoring and enforcement updates. Some of the changes take effect as soon as January 1, 2024, with others taking effect on July 1, 2024, and January 1, 2025.

The changes affect nearly every hospital in the country and necessitate updates, modifications and in some cases complete overhauls, of existing hospital price transparency files.
