The “Rurban” Strategy: Two-Step Medicare Reclassifications

This presentation will provide an overview of the Medicare geographic reclassification rules, including recent changes in CMS policy providing additional reclassification opportunities for urban hospitals. Participants will learn about the requirements for urban to rural reclassification, as well MGCRB reclassification. In addition, the presentation will describe the new two-step reclassification, or “rurban,” strategy being pursued by some urban hospitals, including financial implications (such as graduate medical education payments, 340B eligibility and sole community hospital and rural referral center status), timing considerations, common issues and potential pitfalls for this strategy.
