- A recent Revista blog post compared on-campus versus off-campus MOBs and ownership preferences for each. One interesting takeaway was that REITs own nearly 50% of their MOBs in an on-campus location—nearly the exact same percentage as hospitals. Private investors own nearly half of their MOBs between 1-5 miles away from a hospital.
- A recent analysis found nearly half of all U.S. rural hospitals are operating at a loss, and over 400 are deemed in jeopardy of closing. In response, many rural providers have shed service lines, with nearly 25% of rural hospitals no longer providing obstetrics.
- Becker’s published a roundup of six health systems that recently launched or expanded their hospital-at-home programs in an effort to free up hospital beds and reduce readmissions in a lower-cost setting.
- Two notable philanthropic gifts were recently announced in support of facility development and expansion: (1) Christus Children’s Hospital (San Antonio, TX) received a $1.5M donation from the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Fund; and (2) the Medical Society of South Charleston donated $20M to Roper St. Francis (Charleston, SC).
- A recent report from JLL predicted U.S. outpatient volume growth at 10.6% over the next five years, driven in part by an aging population. New construction is predicted to be centered around high-acuity uses like cancer and cardiology, while conversions and renovations are on the rise for lower-acuity services.
- The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), under President Donald Trump’s administration, has terminated leases for at least 748 federal sites, including HHS and CMS offices as well as 30 FDA facilities across 23 states.
- A bill to repeal all CON requirements in West Virginia was defeated by one vote in the House Health Committee. A similar effort in the State Senate is still moving forward. Current law imposes CON requirements on a variety of services, including ASC, hospice, private practices and specialty care.
- Tampa General, LifePoint and USF held a ribbon cutting for a new behavioral health hospital in Tampa. The hospital is 83,000 sf and has 96 inpatient beds. It is Florida’s first freestanding AMC-affiliated behavioral hospital.
- University Hospitals (Cleveland, OH) will invest $3M in an 80-unit multifamily housing development aimed at improving social determinants of health in the community. Nearly all of the units will be designated for low-income residents.
- Methodist Healthcare plans to invest $250M to expand two campuses in suburban San Antonio, TX, including the construction of a new six-story patient tower and adding floors to an existing bed tower.
