Weekly Hospital Real Estate Briefing: Central FL Hospital Development Remains Hot | Northwell Invests $1B as Part of Northwell Affiliation | New Specialty Hospitals Announced

  1. A recent article highlighted frictions between the development of behavioral health hospitals, which many advocates argue are necessary, and local resistance from neighbors who fear such facilities might undermine the neighborhood’s character.
  2. After recently breaking ground on a $777M cancer facility in Sugar Land, TX, MD Anderson announced that it is continuing to evaluate expansions into nearby fast-growing neighborhoods, such as Cypress, TX.
  3. Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah broke ground on a new cancer center in Vineyard, UT which will expand capacity for research, care, education and training. The $400M facility will be funded in part by a $75M gift from the Huntsman Family Foundation and several other private donations.
  4. The State of Connecticut approved a proposed affiliation between Nuvance Health and Northwell Health that involves transferring ownership of several Nuvance hospitals to Northwell. As part of the affiliation, Northwell will invest at least $1B across the Nuvance portfolio.
  5. University of Iowa Health Care held a ribbon-cutting for its new $526M orthopedics hospital in North Liberty, IA. The facility has 469,000 sf, sits on 60 acres and has its own 36,000-sf utility plant to support the hospital.
  6. WVU Medicine announced more than $460M in capital projects this year, which includes a $200M patient tower in Martinsburg, WV, a $122M outpatient cancer center in Wheeling, WV, two new ASCs, a pediatric facility and an outpatient facility in various other areas of the state.
  7. Orlando Health announced plans to spend over $750M to develop a new hospital, freestanding emergency departments and physician offices in Brevard County, FL.
  8. AdventHealth bought a medical office park in Orlando’s popular Mills 50 neighborhood for $60M. The acquisition includes a 5-story MOB, an 850-space parking garage and a vacant lot where a 90,000-sf second MOB tower has been proposed.
  9. Ascension recently announced it will sell its remaining four hospitals, an ASC and 35 outpatient clinics in Michigan to Beacon Health.
  10. Construction commenced on a $145M pediatric-focused behavioral hospital in South Los Angeles, which will be one of a small number of such facilities in the country. The facility will include an inpatient psychiatric ward, outpatient services and a 24-unit transitional housing development for families receiving care at the facility.
