Weekly Hospital Real Estate Briefing: Cleveland Clinic Announces ASC Joint Venture | Geisinger Breaks Ground on Hospital Expansion | Atrium Health’s Innovation District

  1. A new report argues that Alabama’s certificate of need law is negatively impacting health care in the state. Researchers estimate that Alabama would have 52 more hospitals, the cost of care would be reduced and post-surgery complications would decrease by 5.2% but for certificate of need restrictions.
  2. New data has been published on private equity (PE)-owned psychiatric hospitals in the U.S. Key takeaways: 1) from 2013 to 2021, PE ownership in free-standing psychiatric hospitals increased from 8% to 14%; 2) there were 42 PE-owned psychiatric hospitals in 2013 and 87 in 2021; 3) two-thirds of the hospitals were located in the southern U.S.; and 4) PE-owned psychiatric hospitals performed better on certain metrics, but were often associated with lower staffing ratios.
  3. Cleveland Clinic and Regent Surgical announced a joint venture to develop ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) within the Clinic’s U.S. markets and to streamline the Clinic’s outpatient care capabilities. The Clinic will be the majority owner of the joint venture and the ASCs will have Cleveland Clinic branding.
  4. Geisinger broke ground on an $880M hospital expansion project on its Danville, PA campus. The project will include an 11-story tower, a larger emergency department, additional patient rooms and a new parking garage.
  5. A new $300M state behavioral hospital with 140 beds will be built in Jamestown, ND. The new hospital will replace an existing behavioral hospital in Jamestown that is over 100 years old.
  6. Siemens announced plans to invest $141M into Atrium Health’s innovation district in Charlotte, NC, known as “The Pearl.” The project will include a 60K-sf experience center, although few details were provided. The Pearl is a $1.5B innovation district that will be anchored by a new medical school.
  7. Prisma Health broke ground on a new $138M behavioral hospital in Easley, SC. The new hospital will be funded, in part, by a $100M state funding grant.
  8. OrthoArizona announced plans to open five new outpatient facilities and expand five existing facilities to accommodate an increase in patient demand. OrthoArizona employs 300 providers, 100 surgeons and has 36 locations in the Phoenix metro area.
  9. Cottage Health (CA) announced plans to provide employees with up to $500,000 in down payment assistance if they buy homes in the Santa Barbara area. Housing prices have skyrocketed in Santa Barbara, and the health system wants to help employees find housing near its hospital campus.
  10. The former Intermountain Health Lutheran Hospital campus in Wheat Ridge, CO will be sold and redeveloped into 1,200 to 1,500 residential housing units, according to a news report. Intermountain Health recently relocated its Lutheran Hospital to a new location several miles from the campus being sold.
