Weekly Hospital Real Estate Briefing: Ascension to Acquire AMSURG | MUSC and Clemson University Partner on Health Care Facility | Emory to Create Regional Health Care Hub

  1. A Pennsylvania bill designed to restrict for-profit and investor-owned health care merger and acquisition activity has passed the House of Representatives. The bill gives the State’s Attorney General the power to deny transactions that are “against public interest.” The legislation was created in response to Prospect Medical Holdings filing for bankruptcy protection and closing two hospitals in Pennsylvania.
  2. Ascension has entered into an agreement to acquire AMSURG. The transaction will add more than 250 ambulatory surgery centers across 34 states to Ascension’s hospital and health care network.
  3. University of Iowa Health Care officials met to discuss whether their proposed $1.5B, 842K-sf inpatient hospital tower project in Iowa City should proceed in light of potential changes to federal funding. UIHC officials cited changes to Medicare, Medicaid and 340B (drug) pricing that could impact the feasibility of the project.
  4. Mayo Clinic opened a new $320M, 228K-sf cancer treatment facility in Jacksonville, FL. The building will house the first carbon ion therapy program in the Americas, and advanced technology that can seamlessly deliver both carbon ions and protons to treat the same tumor.
  5. Emory Healthcare (GA) announced plans to create a regional hub for health care in central Georgia. The announcement comes after Emory completed a transaction to operate two hospitals owned by Houston Healthcare System (GA).
  6. BayCare Health (FL) announced plans to convert a 35-acre office park in Tampa into an academic health and research corridor. The news comes after BayCare announced a strategic partnership with Northwestern Medicine. BayCare acquired the office park in February for $145M.
  7. Sanford Health’s (SD) new orthopedic hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, is receiving media attention. The hospital is currently under construction. Once completed, it will be nine stories, 161K-sf and will include a 56K-sf boutique Highlands Hotel within the hospital building. The project is expected to cost $161M.
  8. MUSC (SC) and Clemson University announced a partnership to build a new 70K-sf health care facility on Clemson’s campus. The project will replace an outdated health care facility on the University’s campus. The project is expected to cost $73M.
  9. Texas Oncology broke ground on a new $120M, 100K-sf facility across from the Baylor, Scott & White hospital campus in Plano, TX. Once completed, it will consolidate oncology services from multiple locations into one building.
  10. Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation publicly unveiled 16 one-bedroom affordable housing units in Cahokia Heights, IL, near Touchette Regional Hospital. The $6.5M project called “Vivian’s Village” is designed to address an affordable housing shortage in the area, along with certain wraparound services.
