Recently, we have seen a surge in new children’s hospital projects across the country. Our team is currently working on multiple new free-standing children’s hospital projects that will have a significant impact on pediatric care in several states. These projects often include joint ventures between children’s hospitals and academic medical centers.

Below is a summary of five children’s hospital projects that are noteworthy.

  1. Texas – UT Southwestern and Children’s Health have announced a new $5B pediatric campus in Dallas, Texas. The project will be anchored by a new Moody’s Children’s Hospital, and it will include 4.9M sf of space and 552 inpatient beds on 33 acres of land. The project is expected to open in 2031.
  2. North Carolina – Duke Health and UNC Health have announced a new $2B pediatric campus in Apex, North Carolina. The development will be anchored by the state’s first free-standing children’s hospital, called North Carolina Children’s Hospital, which will be jointly operated by Duke Health and UNC Health. The project will include a 500-bed pediatric hospital, along with behavioral health and surgery center services on a 230-acre campus. The project is expected to open in the early 2030s.
  3. Nevada – Intermountain Health announced plans to build the state’s first free-standing children’s hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada. The project, estimated at $1B, is expected to include 150 to 200 beds and will be constructed on a 30-acre campus at the UNLV Research and Technology Park. The hospital is expected to open in 2030.
  4. Missouri – Children’s Mercy announced plans to build a new hospital tower on its Kansas City, Missouri campus. The project is expected to cost more than $1B and will expand the hospital’s NICU, PICU and emergency department and increase bed capacity by 25% to 30%. The project is expected to open in 2031.
  5. Kentucky – Norton Healthcare announced plans to build a new pediatric campus in Jefferson County, Kentucky. The project will include a new children’s hospital, research facilities and expanded specialty care. The project will be located on 150 acres of land and is still currently being planned.
